I do both. I am in as many classes as I can get to and afford; some are $25each; some are $300 for 8 or 10, it just depends. But when I have an audition, I work with my coach. I make an appointment with her and go in with as much memorized as possible and perform for her; she gives me feedback. She is more like $50 / hour but well worth it!

Yours is kinda like the singer who wonders whether he should take voice from a voice teacher or a vocal coach. The voice teacher will teach you HOW to sing; the vocal coach will prepare a specific song for an audition or a performance.

At 15, I'd say stay in classes as much as possible but as you do shows with adult actors or see local actors in performances, find one that might be willing to be your coach for specific occasions.

Personally, I think classes on a regular basis. You need the input and acting of others to feed and build off of. There are so many benefits to classes. You get the opinions of several people and not just one person. Doing improv and other class type activities will only work in this situation, not so much with a one on one coach.

The point of a coach is to prepare a specific piece such as a monologue or sides for an audition. They have their place, but it's more specialized in my opinion. You should absolutely have one that you use, but not exclusive of classes. Just for preparing certain pieces or for certain roles.

my two cents

Hi,

Good question. Go to this link on my site for new and aspiring actors. http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/taking_acting_classes.html . There you will find 23 reasons why I like classes. I've also worked with coaches. Both are good, but if you have to choose, then I would take classes with a really good and noteworthy and experienced teacher. There are different schools of thought, but I just believe that nothing can replace seeing your classmates work, prepare, make mistakes, take critiscm and see how your expert teacher deals with their issues and helps them overcome them.

If you can afford it, you could do both, but then again if you do have some extra money lying around, you might consider doing other things that can help you get started in your career.

Hope that helps!

Tony

At 15 it's probably better to stick with classes for a while just so you don't get too much pressure put on you, as acting coaching is quite in depth and requires hours of hard work ( talking from experience here) wait until the intensity of school has died down a bit unless you think you can handle it. But be warned it's tuff.

If you just want to act then, definitely, classes will give you a broader knowledge. But if you are looking to specialise in a particular area, say comedy, then you should look for a coach to work with you specifically on that.
Have fun!
ps. I live in Queensland, so you're in a better position to take advantage of the performing arts.

Yes i can tell u - I was looking at international performing arts courses recently and came across the 'New York Film academy'. The academy runs four-week courses or one-year programs in acting (as well as film-making, 3-D design etc). It is pretty expensive though!

I'd stick with classes for several reasons.

Cheaper.

Acting almost always requires others to play a scene with.

Networking/contacts in the performance biz are important.

Unless the private tutor is a bright transcendent genius, you get more from the class b/c the other students also contribute knowledge.

Acting classes and workshops help to constantly hone your craft. Acting coaches help for specific auditions and roles.

If you have experience in plays to equal your classes, I'd say make a resume and seek an agent. For more info, read my profile and write me at my aol address.
