I have a Lexmark 5400 series, and I have a problem. I can send faxes, but for some reason I cannot receive them. I checked the phone line connection, and that was not the problem. I read the manual's troubleshooting section, and nothing worked. HELP PLEASE!!!

I think I would delete the drivers and reinstall them again.

Step 1 - If you turn to the back of the owners manual it should be written in Japanese, read that version in case certain phrases didn't translate well into English. Also it will be about as understandable as the English version.

Step 2 - Bang your phone on the counter repeatedly while jumping up and down and threatening to switch to a VoIP phone if it doesnt start working immediatly.

Step 3 - Throw away the Lexmark and buy a brand that works. IBM makes the worst printer / fax stations possibly in the known universe.

Step 4 - Be prepared to accept the fact that maybe you can receive faxes but just noone wants to fax you, Or they are also using a Lexmark fax that also does not work.

There really is not a way to fix that. The printer remember that cartridge as empty and nothing is going to change that. Just keep printing - first signs of fading refill or replace. When you first see fading, you usually only have about 10 pages at 5% coverage left.

Do you have an answering machine? If so, how many rings? How many rings is your fax? Does your phone ring when someone tries to send you a fax? If you don't answer your phone, what do they hear?
