its naive to think that you can be friends with everyone you meet. there will always be people who just dont like you for reasons of their own or people who dislike. sometimes they will have valid reasons for disliking you but sometimes its just a character clash.
As for knowing who is a friend, watch how they treat other people behind their backs. If they are bitching about everyone to you then chances are they are bitching about you to other people.
But there is no fool-proof way to know if the person is a true friend or not, you often have to risk it or else live in a paranoid world of your own

I don't throw around the word 'Friend', lightly.
You can't be friends with EVERYONE.
I got this analogy a long time ago and it's put things into perspective for me: Picture your friends and you sitting around a fire on a cold night.... as you 'add' more friends to your group... the circle expands and you move further away from the heat. Therefore, you have to really consider who you want to share that fire with.
In your life, there'll be many acquaintances, but few friends.... and that's a good thing!

You cannot be friends with everyone. It's not feasible and can possibly be dangerous too. Would you be friends with a known liar or thief? I didn't think you would.
Find people who share some of your interests and who will be there for you.

My friends are people I like, respect ,trust, and care about. I do not decide based upon outwards appearance, age, or gender. I keep in touch with my friends whenever possible. Friends are always friends.

There is an old saying that is very true. "You can't please all of the people all of the time." Never expect eveyone to like you, because you will sooner or later be disappointed.
