You're right in thinking that people should use good grammar and that's why they should take some time to think before they write. If people who have graduated still need help, they should buy a book and teach it to themselves. I suggest you do the same to brush up on some techniques. Such as in your first sentence: Why is peoples grammar.... The word "is" ("Is" is singular, if you had the question written as "Why is Beth's grammar so bad these days?" the the word "is" is right because Beth is only one person), therefore, the word "is" in your sentence should be replaced with the word "are" (plural: because of the word "peoples" in your sentence, peoples...more then one). As for peoples grammar, this should be possessive, and should have the apostrophe written as "people's grammar". Your sentence should now read: Why are people's grammar so bad these days? Perhaps, taking an English Composition course to learn a few of these tricks and then you'll write like a pro.
And yes, txt mssgs, is a new way to write, but I see that it bothers you as it does others here.
Good for you trying to help yourself and others.

What a wonderful question, it has produced a very entertaining set of answers. Unfortunately, it is based on a false premise, namely that things were better in the past. There never was a time when the majority of the English nation could write using the rules of formal grammar (as distinct from spelling) correctly. Fifty years ago, only a minority of the population left school with a formal qualification in English and many people only put pen to paper once they had left school to let the milkman know how many pints to leave. The significant difference now is that so many people have an opportunity to display their writing talents to a wide audience.
Just one correction to the answer, 'is' is the correct choice because it refers to the grammar not the people.

Most people can spell fine they just can't be bothered to think about what they are writing (of course, there are people who are dyslexic etc. that's different!)... I can't say it bothers me too much when people make mistakes but it does annoy me when ppl typ lk ths... it's just lazy...
I don't know many people in school at the moment so can't say how they are taught but I should think there is still an emphasis on spelling.
We were given spelling tests and spelling books when I was in first school... every time we saw a new word, we had to write it in our spelling books...

I think there are several reasons. One of them is that these people haven't bothered to learn to spell properly in the first place. Another is that they simply can't be bothered to spell properly.
Grammar is a different matter.
Again it's a case of not bothering.
And it's the same with punctuation.

People just don't take as much pride in the written word as they once did. When was the last time you received a hand-written letter? Probably not that recently. Basically people no longer take pride in writing, spelling and grammar so these things are in decline.

properly, area of it particularly is the undeniable fact that there are babies at school who do not comprehend English. how are you able to coach somebody that would not comprehend our language? I surely have associates who're instructors right here in l. a. and it particularly is totally not common for them. additionally, with each and every of the texting and emails, every person is starting to be lazy approximately going back and correcting grammar and spelling. My take basically.

no people can be bothered to spell but when a person is texting there is a limit to how many letters they can use so they shorten the words so they can fit more in and so it is quicker. but if people say things like "i ain't goin nowhere" its probably because of where they are from or because of the way they have been brought up (its there parents fault)

Id say its lazyness and spell checks on computers. I dont mind bad grammar to be honest, there is no point writing the perfect messege to simply convey that you wish to meet at the pub at 3 for example. Of course to be casual with ones writing under formal circumstances is a no as well.

THE CORRECT WAY TO SAY THIS IS:
"WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE SUCH POOR GRAMMAR THESE DAYS!"
Sorry to yell, but I can't believe that not one of you caught that! oy!
I'm very sorry to tell the person above me that they too are incorrect because the subject is not the plural (possesive) noun "people's" but the singular (collective) noun "grammar" The problem is that the entire sentence structure needs to be altered. I believe it should be the one i've written above in all caps.

Because most English teachers do not know Grammar themselves, people tend to write as they speak, while people who learn another language, care for grammar rules, In my country, i learnt the rules of Grammar well. This age is the age of computer and Internet and now one bothers to study for even half an hour a day.
