You may not be able to as most bat species are now protected by law and you can't touch them. Speak to your local environmental health deptartment at the council they will advise what can be done.

Bats do not like light or constant air currents whilst they are roosting, but, it is against the law to -

'Intentionally or recklessly damage, destroy or obstruct access to any place that a bat uses for shelter or protection'

also

'Intentionally or recklessly disturb a bat while it is occupying a structure or place that it uses for shelter or protection. There is a defence that this is not illegal in a dwelling house, but the defence can only be relied on (other than in the living area of a dwelling house) if the relevant SNCO was notified about the proposed action and allowed reasonable time to advise as to whether it should be carried out, and if so, how.

I would suggest that you read this link and then contact them for advice.

My sis in law has pipistrelle bats in her loft when she moved in. They roost there at certain times of the year it seems and like hanging against the sunny-facing wall for warmth. They didn't fly around the loft but the in-laws couldn't use it while the bats were in residence. My bro in law therefore, when the bats were away doing whatever it is bats do, built a false wall about a foot away from their roosting wall. It didn't disturb them. They still come in and roost and my in-laws can still use their loft at any time. Bats are a protected species and it's very interesting to watch them leave at night to go hunting. There are hundreds of them.

Because bats are protected only licensed people can move or disturb them. They will not harm your house but over time the ammonia from urine will become unpleasant. Talk to the local authority, they can put you in touch with your local at handler.

Try putting bat roosing boxes outside your house - well up an old tree if possible. That way, they will have somewhere to go if you DO exclude them. Have you many? I'm jealous - they are fascinating creatures. Please dont do anything without first contacting a licenced bat handler. I'm sure you mean them no harm.

If they are in your attic buy moth balls and toss them up there. The bats hate the smell of them and will leave. If they are somewhere else in your house that you can't shut a door and leave a window open then you will probably have to get an exterminator.

I have been told that the plug in sound wave things that don't really work on anything else will work on bats. And it sort of makes sense to me. Doesn't harm them, but might make them move.
