I can't remember if they did. I've been watching Republicans on t.v. scolding the Democrats for not condemning Moveon.org's character assassination of General Petraeus. What the Swift Boat veterans did was also despicable. John Kerry voluntarily joined the military and risked his life to serve his country during the Vietnam War while Bush joined the National Guard to avoid being drafted.

How come the Swift Boaters didn't attack Bush for avoiding the draft? Bush doesn't have a problem with sending others to war; but he sure didn't want to go.

Did the Bush campaign ever apologize for what they did to John McCain?

Its a political thing. If you wish to attack someone so you can gain in the polls, have someone else do it for you. Even if you say they aren't representing your views the damage has been done. A good example were the attacks on John McCain during the primaries of 2000 by the neocons so they could get bush on the ballet. A true hero discredited by a draft dodger.

I'd like to see a source for jeeper_peeper3's assertions that any Republicans ever apologized for the Swift Boat lie. I believe certain Republicans, when pressed, first denied the Party had anything to do with it, and when connections between official Republican organizations and the inventors of the smear were uncovered, denied they personally had anything to do with it. But they were more than happy so many people bought the story. Still are, looking at all these answers!

I couldn't find a source, but it stands to reason that McCain may very well have been personally offended by the smear and said as much. He had two reasons for doing so: 1) he also was a Vietnam Vet and US Senator and would have better information than most if there was a shred of truth to the smear; 2) he himself was the victim of a slander in the South Carolina primary and many analysts at the time thought it cost him a key victory there. The victorious Bush campaign denied any connection with the smear but never publicly disavowed it.

Why? When John Kerry came home from Viet Nam. He called those very same "despicable" men murderers, torturers, and rapists. They had every right to have their say, despite the fact you and everyone else that supported that phoney "war hero" didn't want to hear it. John Kerry got three boo boos and went home in just under three months, while those men had to stay and fight. Immediately upon his return he gets his face all over the media accusing those men of atrocities and war crimes. He then makes a political career on the basis of "vote for me, I'm the war hero." John Kerry is despicable.

the swift boaters don't have an axe to grind with Bush. It was against Kerry. It was personal to them. Those men weren't pulled out of thin air. The swift boaters were the men with whom John Kerry served with.

I don't think so and why should they? You're comparing apples and oranges. There's a big difference between speaking out against a presidential candidate during a presidential campain and smearing a general while the country is at war and before he speaks.

If all of our troops were like John Kerry, there would be no America.

i might want to work out the condemnation McCain positioned on the Swiftboat commercials 4 years in the past. have been given a link? Addition: thank you for the link. definite, I agree, if he replaced into so against the commercials in 2004, he ought to have instructed the fast Boat backers to maintain their funds. yet McCain continues to be lightyears better than Obama. arms down.

What John Kerry did was openly consort with the enemy in time of conflict and offer lies and false testimony againt the very people he served with. Who can blame them for clearing their names by telling the truth about Kerry's non-courage? There's a world of difference between what the Swift Boat Veterans did and the libelous ad that the morons at moveon did, and if you can't recognize that, there's something wrong with you.

They used the attacks to avoid the real issues in the 2004 election. Karl Rove used the terrorism and gay marriage issue to scare voters. Bush should never been reelected in 2004. For him to stand criticize the moveon.or ad show how hypocritical Bush and the GOP are.

What we did was praise the Swift Boat Veterans for returning to "active duty" to further serve their country. We also rewarded them for their patriotism by buying their book. It's still available for those who would like to further reward them for keeping Kerry far away from the White House.

Why should the GOP condemn the Swift Boaters? It was the truth, the traitorous Kerry piece of crap.

Actually yes they did, Bush condemned the ads right after they came out, so did McCain and other Republicans.
