This normally is caused by a problem with DNS. Either they are not being sensed by the router from your ISP, or you have a set number in the properties of the network device on the computer. Once everything is set properly, the DNS numbers in the router will transfer and be the same as in the computer. Through a command prompt run an ipconfig command and get the numbers. Also go into the router admin and check the numbers the router gets from the ISP. This will give you a hint as to where the problem is.

Had the same problem. Called in the techy. Turned out I already had a built in wireless card in the laptop, and did not need to add in the one Bigpond gave me. I had gotten myself confused!
Check that you don't already have an inbuilt connection. Find 'device manager' and look. Then if you do, take off the new connection and only use the existing one.
If you don't have an inbuilt card, and you do need the one supplied, and you can't do it, call in the pros. It will save hours..literally. You can dig yourself a big hole with wireless.

oooh. I am familiar with this problem. I have worked on a notebook with a problem similar. Do you have a Gateway? If so, you may have to take it in to Best Buy and they can unblock it. I don't know why this happens. If you are getting a great signal, and it shows you are actually connected, I would take it to a tech. It should be free of charge from where it was purchased. Good Luck

I have had this problem sometimes. I have always found that is a dirty connection at the ariel. Take it out and re-connect it, it always works for me. Try to solve the easy solution first before calling someone out.

Has this worked in the past? Is this a new router or connection you are trying to connect to?

PING the router to see if you get a response.

Start + run +ping + [ip address of router] (something like: 192.168.0.1)

If not reconfigure the TCP/IP stack or IP configuration. (ipconfig)

Is this a Windows machine?

Xenix, Unix, Linux ?

It sounds like you have not setup your router to talk to your ISP.

Have you connected your broadband modem to the WAN port in the router? Have you followed the install instructions of your router to connect to your ISP?

Routers are not just plug in and go surfing. They need to be configured correctly.
