i think it should be... Ed sat at my left side, or Ed sat beside me... and Try changing the sentence to During the entire procedure, Ed sat beside me while holding my hand so u could differentiate the actions done more clearly :)

you could try:
"Ed sat on my left side, holding my hand during the entire procedure"
or
"Ed sat on my left side, while holding my hand, during the entire procedure"
just to break it up a bit.
