This goes to the core of the English problem...
We are made to feel guilty for the sins of our ancestors, which is bloody ridiculous.
Look through history, and there will not be a people without horrors in the closet, and Africa is no different, even now with the recent Genocide in Rwanda.
I don't see many appologies coming from anywhere else...
Yes, slavery was totally wrong, but i'm not to blame anymore than anyone else alive today. I could go on, but it will only wind me up more....

I was not aware that we had apologised as a country, could you show me when we have?

The Romans, the Moors and to a lesser extent the Vikings(they were mainly farmers, any British town/village ending in 'by' was a Viking farming settlement) did have slavery.

The point is that they knew no better, we did. The slaver's knew it was wrong because they couldn't bring themselves to describe themselves as such, describing themselves as being involved in the 'African Trade'. They knew it was wrong, but still did it because it was so lucrative.

The Romans, Moors and Vikings, although pretty advanced cultures in certain aspects, had not evolved sufficiently to understand that slavery is despicable. Britain had that understanding at the time and yet still allowed it, that is the difference.

Slavery is still practised throughout the world today, and needs to be fought with as much passion and determination that Wilberforce used to the force the abolition through Parliament against heavy opposition I might add.

A visit to the new slavery exhibition at Liverpool Maritime Museum should be the first thing on the list for anyone who expresses an opinion on this.

Hi.....

I agree, although slavery was certainly wrong, it was considered the way to be back then, many civilisations had slaves!

It was also, taken erroneously from the bible, stating:
'The dark race, will be the slaves of men'!!

The African government should also be saying 'sorry' for it all, as it was the chiefs of the tribes, that were 'selling' the slaves to the white men, in the first place!!

Also, surely a 'Thankyou' would be quite fitting to England too, as it was England that 'stopped' the slave trade, denouncing it as wrong and barbaric.

America, Spain etc had no plans to stop the slave trade, how much longer would it had gone on, if England had not led the way and banned it?

I didn't think we DID apologise in the end? I thought it was an expression of regret, which was fine with me. After all, the people wronged and the people who did the wronging are long dead... what does an apology actually achieve.

But yes, if we did, then I want reparations from Italy (Romans), Denmark (vikings), France (Normans) onwards.

Not sure I agree with your last sentence though, individual behaviour shouldn't speak for everyone.

Not on your life. remember the British are the easiest whipping boys. I find it quite amusing that the Blainia apologises so readily for things his so called government had no control over but not for taking us into a war on the basis of a lie.

I am aware that slavery is still rampart world wide often with governments turning a blind eye. I think it should be remembered that Africans and Arabs were also involved in the slave triangle and one can not help but feel that we face double standards here.

I read in " The Londoner " yesterday that when Ken Livingston was dedicating the Nelson Mandela statue in Trafalgar Square, he announced that there is to be an annual memorial day ( along the lines of Remembrence Day ) devoted to victims of the slave trade.
I have yet to hear anyone apologise to any of the troops or their families that were forced to join up and fight in conflicts that were not of their making.
