Not true! Elvis was called the King of Rock & Roll in the
1950's (not 60's as previously posted) probably by Alan
Freed. It first appeared as a banner headline in the music
trade mag. "Variety" in 1956 and was picked up by his
record company RCA who promoted it.
To 'cat stevens' below: The Beatles were mostly influenced by Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, although they admired Elvis
there were other more important influences.

Phil Jupitus is wrong.
When Elvis went into the army he was amazed how many people came to wave him off - he said something along the lines that it was like the President. A friend said to him "that's only the President, you are the King"

Phil Jupitus loves the sound of his own voice and talks and writes absolute b******s.
Elvis was called "The King" right from the early days of his career.

I disagree on that because when Jerry Lee lewis said he was the King of rock and roll, elvis fans were furious and said there is only one King and that was Elvis. This was about 4 years before his death, and ever since Elvis has been the King. At a concert in Las Vegas, he was introduced as the "King".

Hello. As a 'golden oldie' here,I recall the term of 'King' given to E.P. well before he died. What is strange however that an American would call him 'King' even though there is no Monarchy in the USA!
Anyway, there were better singers and performers than Elvis who could take the crown away!
Oops - hate mail on way!

No. if you watch mnay of his 1970's performances, he wears his crown, a symbol that he is the king.
If my bad memory serves me correctly, Elvis was named the king in the early 60's.
