I remember as a child in the 1950's when the bins were made of metal because, in those days, most people had coal fires and dropped the ashes in the bins with the other rubbish. Once a week a small dustbin wagon would come along and two burly men would pick them up and empty the contents into the bin wagon. Life must have been much simpler then because we just about managed to fill the bin over a week, ashes and all. Nowadays the wheelie bin holds twice as much as the old bin used to and i always managed to fill it, must be all that extra packaging on food that we didn't get in the 50's. Today the bin is simply wheeled to the wagon and hydraulically lifted to be emptied. The old bins had to be carried physically and many operatives had to retire as they got older due to failing strength and damage to their backs and arms. So, in conclusion, I think if you were to ask the average binman what he thinks he would be greatly in favour of the present system. Believe me, carrying two of the old bins at a time, which is what they used to do, was no joke.

we have had wheely bins for years, it is fine.
what I object to is my council imposing fortnightly bin collections. My bin is emptied on a Friday - so if I have a takeaway (curry) on a friday night and a roast joint on a Sunday - then that has got to sit festering my bin for two weeks with all the other waste and nappies, in the summer heat we get maggots every year, no matter how carefully I wrap the waste. disgusting.

Its far more hygienic and safer because of the rats and other scavengers. It doesn't take much to put rubbish and recycling materials into different bins. Anyone who says its crap shouldn't be posting in Higher Education as they don't have much of a brain.

i like them, it stops animals ripping into my bags although the bins them selves can get a bit whiffy, and it is easier to get the wheelie bin to the kerb than a load of stinky black bags

i think they are a good idea. in my opinion, people who moan about using different wheelie bins are just lazy.
