Haa. Thanks for reminding. The wireless network actually belongs to me and I am in the same room as the wireless router. I just don't understand why I cannot see it in this particular laptop, but it is working fine on the others. Anyone got any idea?

How do you know it's unsecured network ? (to know that, definitely you should see that wireless network in your laptop's wireless software) Go to Control Panel -> Network & Internet Connections -> Wireless Connection. Then right click on the wireless adaptor & select properties. After that double click on Internet PRotocol [TCP/IP]. Then in General tab select "Obtain an IP address automatically". Then try to connect the new wirelss network. Sure it will connect. But be sure to within the close range of their wireless access point to get good signal quality.

Your workgroup names have to match - and the other network has to have file and print sharing enabled.

The "unsecured" part refers to the actual wireless connection not being encrypted. It doesn't mean that the computers sharing that connection will be accessable.

Your IP addressing scheme is incorrect.

Check the web for instructions on setting up correct IP addresses. Remember, this is inside your house and it is a private network; only when you have your router connected to the modem will you have the internet. So, get your network up and going, then go to the world.

On my cousins network, I tried getting in using my PSP. I later found out that even though it says it was unsecured, they had to push a button on the router and configure it to let me in. Bummer

Since there are so many answers already, I'll try from another angle.

Is your wireless running in Mixed mode (G&B)? Maybe your AP is wireless-G and your notebook is wireless-B?

If this is someone else's network and you do not have their permission, to connect would be illegal and can cost you up to 5 years in prison.
