ITS ANSWER IS 6 DAYS AND AND I CANT UNDERSTAND HOW COULD 6 DAYS IS A ANSWER

Therefore,the garrison has 24x kg food
When each individual ration is reduced by 20%,the daily consumption comes down to
0.8x kg
Therefore 24x kg would suffice for 24x/0.8x=30 days]
Do you mean reduced to 20% or reduced by 20%.Naturally,food quota for military is not reduced to 20% and hence I have solved the problem presuming that it was reduced by 20%
If it is reduced to 20%,then the answer will be
24x/0.20x=120 days.

let x be the number of people in the garrison that will consume 1/24 of the food in 1 day thus, 1/24
x=1/24
let y be the number of days the food will last if the ration is cut by 20% and 1/y is the amount of food consumed in a day when the ration is cut by 20%:
x-0.2x=1/y ; 0.8x=1/y
substitute the value of x from the first equation:
0.8(1/24)=1/y
0.8/24=1/y
y=24/0.8
y=30
