sometimes if it isn't too deep of a burn you can just use sandpaper to remove the scorch, sorry you caught so much slack for your Q.

Hmmm. Either this is in the wrong topic category or it is in the right topic category. I'm not entirely sure of my following answer as the question is furthered to 'Cleaning & Laundry'. I never had a carpet burn that stained my clothes. lol
I'll answer for an actual carpet burn. Hot embers tend to escape past the fireplace protective floor tiles and hit the surrounding carpets. The results are black marks upon my beige carpet and look very unsightly. I take scissors and trim off the scorched strands, this can be tedious, but the results are good.
For a deep burn that causes an actual hole... I do the same method as above. Secondly, I grab some carpet in behind the floorboards or somewhere inconspicuous and cut some carpet strands off at the base. Then, I use a bit of clear silicone to dab onto the base of the burn hole and finally, replant the missing strands until the hole is no more. In fact, I used this method when my old roommate's cat tore the heck out of a small area of carpet, the result was fantastic.

If it's a really deep burn, the only solution is to cut it out. Look around the house and see if there are any pieces of carpet remnant. Some landlords will leave them as floor mats in front of the washer and dryer or a door. If you are lucky enough to have this around cut a strip off of one side wide enough to cover any burn marks. Use a utility knife to cut the scorched spots out of the carpet down to the padding. Cut a piece of you remnant scrap to fit the hole, glue it with liquid nail or some other waterproof adhesive.
Other than that perhaps try painting the spots to match the carpetting.
In the future leave a heat proof plate in your room to set your flat iron on.

NOT MUCH YOU CAN DO FOR A BURNT CARPET. YOU CAN ALWAYS TAKE SOME SCISSORS AND CUT THAT PART OFF,OR YOU CAN PUT A PRETTY RUG OVER IT AND COVER IT UP. NOONE WILL EVEN NOTICE.
