lol...Good point, however would be a right old pain if it Darkened our hair and lighten our skin....Imagine jet black hair and pure white skin? When you come back of hoilday....look like snow white pmsl!

The UV rays of the Sun are harmful to the skin, therefore, they trigger the skin to produce more melanin cells, which are responsible for protecting the skin from Sun damage, and are also responsible for human hair and skin pigment. Obviously some people have more melanin than others, and when the amount of Sunlight received exceeds the amount of melanin being produced, a sunburn results.
Hair is not living tissue and therefore does not require protective cells within it. The Sun rays activate a function in the hair shaft similar to what bleach does, but within limits. All the sunlight in the world won't turn black hair blond.

Exposure to the sun usually causes an increase in the amount of melanin, a dark brown pigment, in the *living* skin. This is quite a complex biochemical and cellular process.
The effect of the sun on the hair is quite different. Melanin is already present in the hair which is not a living tissue and cannot protect or regenerate the melanin already present. Exposure to the sun actually destroys the melanin in the hair, lightening it.
