i've been having a few contractions lately but i have no idea when to call the hospital.

sometimes they can become really close (5 min. apart) yet stop for awhile then continue at different times. it's starting to hurt and i also have back pains, yet because the contractions "wear off" i don't call the hospital or anything.

they say that you should call when the contractions are "too hard to even talk through" and i haven't had ones like that yet but i have had a few that were pretty painful (i'm guessing really strong bh).

i'm posting because i want to know WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO CALL THE HOSPITAL and WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR FIRST FELT TRUE CONTRACTIONS? this question goes out to the preggo mamas who've already been through it.

39 weeks, 5 days.

Hey there I had no idea that i was in labour with my baby cause all i had was a constant sore back and couldn't get comfortable so I called my midwife anyway and she came and checked me out and i was in labour and 3 cm dialated.

If you are unsure call anyway everyone is different,

All the best.

When they are so bad you cant talk through them, around 5 min. apart and don't ware off (if they are going to ware off they are not that bad). If you start to have contractions drink some water and put your feet up if you've been going for awhile, or start walking around if you've been in bed. When it is the real thing they wont ware off. If your really unsure then go ahead and call the hospital just to be sure. Most midwifes can tell by the sound of your voice if you are in labor or not.

With my first child I was induced, which feels completely different then going into labor on your own. With my second, I had been having contractions for a few days (I was a week overdue). I had seen the doctor that day and she was sure that I was in early labor, so she said to go home and call her when it was time. However the contractions seemed to get lighter (but not go away) after I got home. I called to tell her so and she had me take caster oil in three doses. I took the first two but when it came time for the third I couldn't take it or I was going to throw up, my husband called to tell her so and she said it was OK. Then fifteen minutes later the contractions kicked in about 3 min apart and I couldn't walk or talk...we left for the hospital and called the midwife on the way. 2 hours later we gave birth to a beautiful 9 pound 9 oz baby.
Basically relax, when the time is right you'll know. And if you are really unsure.....better safe then sorry.
Congrates on the soon to be new little life

Only you can answer this question because every pregnancy is different. My first was born 36 hours after the first pain with contractions that were so unbearable that I wanted to be put out. The second, 4 hours after the first pain and not very bad contractions, all the way through delivery. No other woman can tell you how hard your contractions should be before you go to the hospital. If you feel you need to go to the hospital than go. Your instinct is the best one for you. Don't mess around and have that baby on your couch.

Time your contractions. It sounds like you've been doing this. When they are evenly spaced at about 5 minutes apart contact your OB or the hospital and let them know. When they are about three minutes apart go to the hospital. Braxtron hicks contractions feel like regular contractions sometimes but they tend to be spaced differently. If you feel uncomfortable and dont know dont hesitate to call them. I was induced with my first and so was already in the hospital and they came very quickly, my second it started as a twinge that got more painful as time passed, each contraction got worse as time went on. I was up doing laundry for an hour after they started though. My third woke me up and told me she was ready. I slept through the light ones. Good luck with your baby honey. Enojoy motherhood. Its the greatest.

Call when they do not go away, your water breaks or if you start to bleed. Try laying on your left side and see if they go away. If they stay constant it is better to call and ask.
