Regardless of the stance you take - it is obvious that a huge section of the public (60% of Portugal according to yesterdays paper) has taken a dislike to them because of their demeanour and or possible lack of warmth. Can you (without mentioning the neglect word or presuming their guilt/innocence) explain what you think they need to do/stop doing in order to regain the support of the public.

(the source for the 60% was the Daily Star - it might be the odd % here or there.

**PonySteel, now now that's naughty - you're not allowed to presume their GUILT or innocence - has to be something they do that prevents you from warming to them.

**Specsy - I agree, and yes a 6 hour meeting is quite long. I'm guessing if they were paying themselves it would have been nearer the 25 minute mark but it's lovely that they're getting the chance to put their excuses forward to a decent lawyer.

At the risk of being shot down....

Gerry & Kate McCann don't need to do a single thing to gain the sympathy & confidence of the public. They have had the worst possible nightmare happen to them - they have lost their child. If the fickle public see fit to sympathise with them on one day & slate them, the next, it speaks only of the coldness of the public, not the McCanns.

Different people react & cope differently to grief.
For all we know, Gerry & Kate McCann must cry themselves to sleep everynight for their Madeleine. They do not have to make a public spectacle of themselves....especially not just to cater to the cheap vicarious whims of a lynch-mob.

I sure, so sure, that even if they did weep in public, it would be construed by that public, as a fake show for sympathy, an act to garner support & they'd be slated for not pulling themselves together & showing some dignity in their grief.

They're damned if they do & damned if they don't, as Lexy once rightly pointed out.

Confessions and tears wouldn't move me. Anyway, it's too late for that.
Every penny of the Fund should be ploughed into the search for Madeleine and it should be public. Dig over fields - even if there is no evidence that Madeleine could ever have been there. Hire private investigators. Start exposing paedophile rings - although that would probably send them over the edge.
This is a public relations thing - it's not designed to find the child. The plan is to win the hearts and minds.
A lot of nonsense,if you ask me.
But hey, it's got to be done if they ever want any sanity in their lives again.
i've got to add: I've always doubted their involvement in their daughter's disappearance and I've no suspicions that they are anything other than grieving parents. But it's not me they're going to have to win over.

I would say they need to do all they can to keep out of the media spotlight, whilst allowing the police (Portuguese and UK) to conduct the investigation without comments from family and friends in the newspapers and without appeals to the Prime Minister or others. I would also say that unless the McCanns know something we don't, there is no point in having 6 hour meetings with top gun London lawyers, since they haven't been charged and it seems unlikely they ever will be.

That's a very good question. I am pretty sure that people have already made their minds up now and its very difficult to change people's opinions. Until we have some proof of what REALLY happened we can only use our imaginations.

Also cry and let us see the pain in their hearts of making a baby together with IVF carrying that child, watching the first teeth, walks and words, 3 birthdays celebrated, thinking that a discusting paedophile may have hurt THEIR daughter badly or possibly killed,AND NO TEARS.
