Old, Classic R&B - soulfulness, more creativity and substance in terms of lyrically content, etc. Also, the music was a mode of confessional art - from discussing socio-economical issues (e.g. Stevie Wonder's "Living For the City", Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler)" or "What's Going On", Curtis Mayfield's "Keep on Pushing", etc. ) to issues more micro, personal such as matters of the heart (Lionel Richie's "Hello", Rufus's "Sweet Thing", Rose Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore") to other personal issues (e.g. New Edition's "Boys to Men", Prince's "When Dove's Cry" or "The Beautiful Ones", Janet Jackson's " Control" or "Let's Wait A While").

Don't get me wrong, there's some new r&b artists who are definetly on point with their music and have that aura of old skool soul such as Lyfe Jennings, Anthony Hamilton, Kelly Price, Musiq Soulchild, Angie Stone, Lemar, Elisabeth Withers, Leela James, Mary J. Blige, etc. But generally speaking, most of the music is over-commmercialized.

Although some of the new R&B is good such as Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans and Jill Scott, I think the older music was better. The music had better lyrics and wasn't so sexually explicit. Certain things were implied and you didn't hear people cussing in their music or rump shaking in videos just to sell a record.

Any genre you ask that question about the answer will always be OLD. Old rap, rock, alternative, r&b, hip hop, country, metal, etc. Corporations have ruined music to the point it's not about talent its about marketability. You're cute? You'll draw a crowd? Signed! Who cares if you cant play! we'll dub something over you and let the computer do it all . . .

Ill take marvin gaye over beyonce any day of the week.
