When I start up my computer, it runs pretty slowly and when my icons and everything come out, it takes like half an hour for something to load or it just doesn't do it. When I run it on safe mode, it goes a lot faster. My antivirus expired so I'm just running the yahoo online version of antispy for the moment. Any tips on how to fix my computer? It just started acting up today after I downloaded avg over my norton yesterday.

I'm trying to delete norton on safe mode but it says I needed to reboot it in normal mode. I can't even access the add or remove programs thing from the control panel in normal mode because it either freezes or just doesn't do it.

have you uninstalled norton before installing avg? two anti-virus usually conflicts each other and may cause system instability. after uninstalling norton and installing avg, update your virus definitions and run a full system scan. download anti-spywares too like spybot and ad-aware and run a full scan too.

1.Because that most software has automatically function. When you go to the system they would automatically run in the background. So you always use the software is more convenient. But it will also cause unnecessary troubles. There is so much software when you start your PC that the speed will slow down and they can impact of your normal use.
2. because that several different applications will produce some temporary files by using the Windows. The system will save some temporary files in System disk after you visit the web page.If you don’t clean up temporary files folder in time, the disk space will be occupied by these temporary files and the speed will be dropped. What is more important is that a lot of virus and malicious procedures producing in the temporary files cause your systems to stop working.
You only need to download system cleaner software to resolve the problems about your PC. It cleans all things that you want, increases your PC speed, saves more disk space, and helps you to the trouble about hardware upgrade. You can click the website http://computer-optimize.com/ to find the satisfied software

Computers will slow down just from using it. If its been a couple of years since youve reinstalled your operating system you might want to consider it. But you need to back up all your important data as this wipes your computer clean.
If this happened overnight, then i would suggest clearing out your cache.
If you use Internet Explorer: In Internet Explorer-Alt>Tools>Internet Options under the Browsing History section click Delete and select everything but your passwords(if you depend on your computer to log you into sites automatically). Cleaning your cache will delete most spyware.

Delete unnecessary files:Start>All programs>accessories>system tools>disc cleanup
delete everything you can

Defrag your hard drive:Start>All programs>accessories>system tools>disc defragmentor
If you have never done this before and have alot of files on your comp this will take hours, leave it run overnight.

When I run my computer, I make sure I have nothing unnecessary loading on startup. In Windows Vista, open up System Configuration (type it in the start search and hit enter) or run msconfig (type it in the run box and hit enter) for XP.

From there you should be able to find the startup tab. Disable anything you think is unnecessary. I, personally, disable everything except windows and malware applications. If I need something like a messenger or office/photo editing quicklaunch app, I'll just bear with loading it manually.

Also, remember to defragment your hard drive regularly.

It depends on which op system you are running, but sounds like you have way too many programs running at startup.
Go to the start menu, click on run, and type msconfig. Click on the startup tab, and shut down any programs you do not need at startup. (I.E. you may still have norton starting up, task scheduler, microsoft office etc...) this should help. If not increase the amount of ram in your computer.

Did you delete norton 1st?sounds like you have run out of ram.Go to add/delete programs and ensure norton has been deleted.Go to search and type in norton and delete all norton files, then type symantec and delete all symantec files. You can do this from save mode as well.
Go to system info and check how much available ram you have left,go to accessoriesstart, programs, accessories, system tools then to system information.when it opens scroll down until you see the how much ram your machine has and how much left is available. You may need to increase the amount of ram in your machine. Also delete all temporary internet files etc and see how you go.

Lots of good answers above. But also consider increasing your computer physical memory or RAM. If your computer uses DDR2s then your in luck coz they are so cheap now compare to older DDR1. They are also very easy to install so no need to pay Best Buy $50 for a 2 min job.

Get rid of Norton on your computer. It is the main cause of slow startups. I have moved to AVG myself and the difference was amazing. do your basic maintenance as well,
System tools, Disk cleanup and defragmenter. between those three you will be suprised at the difference in speed. good luck

run adaware and cc cleaner (both can be found at download.com).

Also, for $30 buck you can get a program called PC Booster which will constanly monitor your memory usage and adjust it according to the setting you put in. Worked wonders for my computer, helped stabilize it from crashes and sped up the boot up time drastically.
