The US wont go out of Iraq and let the Iraqis form their own govt because it knows that the Iraqis will vote for an Islamic form of govt.
The US pretends that it wants democracy in the Middle East but in fact it is fearful of having one.
People in the Middle East tend to vote for Islamic parties for example:
Hizbullah is very popular in Lebanon and all over the Arab world.
Egyptians have voted for the Muslim Brotherhood.
Iranians have voted for conservative Dr Mahmoud Ahmadenijad as their President.
In Iraq we are seeing that the Shia Alliance which is a religious alliance and which was supported by the most respected and revered cleric Ayatollah Ali Seestani was voted to power by the Iraqis.
If the US goes now it wont be able to achieve its aim.
Besides they also want to steal the oil.

The U.S. isn't keeping Iraq from forming their own government. What the U.S. did was obliterate their secular government, then spent almost half a decade shrugging about it.
It's the sectarian violence that's preventing another government. Centuries of bad blood that can't be moored by foreign influences.

Because it wouldnt be the government that we want them to have. Part of the problem with installing a US style of government is that they have had 6 presidents and all of them have been tyrants.

The terrorists want the US out of the middle east, and a return to calyphate government. The US isnt going to let them get what they want.

Interestingly, the calyphate form of governement is more democratic than the US's is (with electoral college instead of 1-man/1-vote)

Take a look at the middle east and its past.. How one PRESIDENT could think he could go in there and change it, is beyond me. If we leave that country 20 years from now, the same crap will happen if we leave today.

Bad- & getting worse. And the U.S. doesn't have a CLUE on what to DO about it. So they CAN'T get out. They "broke it- they bought it." :(
