It really depends on the child. I started my son at 4 months and my daughter at 5 months. I knew they were ready because they looked like they wanted my food. There are some that put the cereal in the baby's bottle early on because they think it will help them sleep through the night but it does not! I would not put cereal in the bottle.

Wait until 6 months if you can. My daughter was 5 1/2 months, no longer taking two naps and a little cranky and always hungry so I started giving her very-watered-down rice cereal once or twice a day and that worked. Don't do it too early because baby's digestive systems aren't ready for solids yet.

I started my daughter on rice cereal when she was 2 months old. She started eating baby food at 4 months. Some would say that is too early but you know your child. My daughter would wake up out of a nap when she smelled me cooking. She ate fruit and veggie baby food for awhile. She didn't develop allergies like a lot of people believe and she doesn't get sick either. She is now 2 years old and only has been to the doctor for well baby checkups and the necessary shots. And she is also above her age developmentally. And is not overweight. So just pay attention to your child and their cues.

I have four children - I always waited until they were 4 months old. All the websites and advice I had seemed to indicate that their little tummy and digestive system was ready at about that age to start taking solids. I started with the cereal mixed with a little breast milk (or formula if you use that). It is so cute watching them try to eat the first times - when they get the hang of it they love it! CUTE!

Some docs recommend starting at 4 months and some at 6 months. I started my son at 4 months because he seemed hungry all the time. Just start with a single grain rice cereal and mix it to a thin consistency.

just wanted to add...if you do start baby on solids, watch out for constipation. i wasn't aware that rice cereal could possibly constipate and my lil' one was miserable for days until Yahoo! Answers suggested that i give her prunes or apple juice to help relieve. and then, when i spoke with my pediatrician, he recommended that i switch to infant oatmeal...has the health benefits, but less chance of constipation...and yeah, AAP recommends starting solids at 6 months.

At 6 months. That's what The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends.
