Many more of us would do so, if we were not spending all our time repairing the damage done by our customers, largely due to an urge to do anything but work, and spending all their time downloading anything they can, even if they have to fiddle with our carefully set up machines to do so. This regardless of repeated warnings that much downloaded material is lethal to computers. If people generally tried to do what they were paid for instead of their own thing, we might get enough time off to hug. We might tend to be more polite to our users, and try to answer their questions with more than a caveman grunt.

Yes it certainly would. I have to agree with Collin on this one though. If we ONLY had the TIME. I'm sure we'd love to hug more.
Think of it like this: Your IT person, is like a brain surgeon. The major difference? The brain your IT person works on changes it's neural network on a daily basis.
Consequently we IT types spend more time doing homework than just about any profession there is. Then there's the family calls. You know the one you made to your 3rd cousin's wife's brother-in-law, saying help I've got an issue?
Amazing how fast we get found in the Family network plan when people have a computer crisis. Wish the lottery concept of the Family network plan worked half as well, LOL. SURE I offer a family rate, it's about 1.5X the standard rate.

Only 2 out of 4,377 IT people surveyed said they were love monkeys. (There was some doubt about their truthfulness, but that is how they answered the survey.) I was in the staffing business before I took an early retirement. I am sure some IT folks are beautiful people, but we often said their lack of people skills was our bread and butter. I am sure most of the ones we considered unemployable ended up at Yahoo.
