if you have not fixed a problem, the light will not stay off. i you have fixed the problem, the light will go out by itself once the pcm retests whatever system set the code. it will test 3 times, and if it passes 3 times the light will go out. if it passes 255 times, the code will be erased from pcm memory.

DO NOT disconnect the battery and tap both cables together unless you want to risk frying your computer. Electronics are sensitive, and even a small voltage spike can ruin a PCM or other module. Yeah, chances are slim that it will, but there's still a chance, do you really want to risk the added expense?
Check with your local parts stores, many will have a basic diagnostic tool that they can plug in, check for codes and tell you what's wrong, and then clear the code for you, all at no charge in the hopes you'll buy your part from them.
The check engine light means something went out of specs and triggered it. Chances are that it will come back on if you clear the code and don't fix the problem, they don't fix themselves.
If it's the gas cap loose (or missing) then it should go out after the problem is corrected.
BTW, Federal Emissions warranty is 8 years or 80k miles and will cover the catalytic converter, PCM, oxygen sensors, and other emissions related parts.

If it's a 96 or newer, you can borrow a scan tool from an auto parts store. They often have tool "rentals" where they ask for a deposit and give it back to you when you return the tool. There is a connector by your shins on either the drivers side or passengers side that it plugs in to. You can see what codes your computer has stored and reset the check engine light. If the problem still exists, the light will come back on after 30 to 40 trips in your car (Could be sooner on some cars)

More importantly, have you found out why it came on in the 1st place?? The check engine comes on for a reason, you must remedy that before resetting the light, or it will just come right back on again. If you did correct the problem, the light will go out in a few days if there is not any other problems. Have it checked out and then you'll know why it came on and what to do to get it off.

If you changed a part and want the light or code cleared usually after awhile the light and code will automatically disappear.Otherwise a code can be cleared via a shop scanner or part store scanner or by a full diagnostic tester via the vehicle's data port. Hope that helps and best of luck.

This is a generic response. Disconnect the battery cable for 5-10 minutes. You can try tapping the positive side 3 times to the battery before tightening the connection.
Pretty sure that you can get the specific answer for your Pacifica at the12volt.com

If your check engine light comes on try tightening the gas cap and see if it goes out. If not then you need to have it analyzed to see what your problem is. Check engine lights come on when there's a problem with your emission. Emissions problems have a 5 year warranty.

Chrysler manual says to disconnect the negative battery cable, turn the ignition key to start for a few seconds, reconnect the cable and the light will reset. If what triggered the light has not been repaired, it will come back on.
