how old do you have to be to live in the dorms?

That may vary by college, but if you are at least 16, you should be fine. If you are younger, it depends on your parents' willingness to let you stay there and the school's willingness to take on the potential liability of an unsupervised young person living in a fairly risky environment.

It'll depend on the college. Some colleges require all students under 18 - regardless of what year they are - to stay in the dorms.

Some colleges require all freshmen to live on campus...some have that requirement plus, do not allow them to have cars on campus year 1; so, check with your intended school and determine the rules fir your situation.
