I have trouble sleeping. I feel tired, but when I go to bed, I just lay there. I do not have health insurance, so I cannot go to a doctor. Any suggestions as to what I might be able to do to help me get to sleep without the use of medications or doctors?

Here are some suggestions:
Try drinking some chamomile tea before bed as it has relaxing properties. Do not watch TV in bed. Do not drink caffeine after lunch. Take a hot bath & relax...light a lavender candle, put on soft music. In bed; turn on a relaxation CD, close your eyes, and breath steadily. Put any worries you have out of your head, at least 1 hour before bed...longer if possible. Make sure all the light is blocked out of your room. Check for noises that may keep your awake ie: a ticking clock.
Good luck, and I hope...sweet dreams.

No caffeine after one or two in the afternoon, no exercise right before you go to bed (exercise earlier in the day), start 2-3 hours before bed time and start eliminating stimuli (dim the lights, turn down the volume on the tv, etc.), take a warm bath and relax (not too hot), maybe get some nature sound cds I like the sounds of a storm. Those are some suggestions that work for me. Good luck. Of course you could always buy some over the counter Benadryl and take about 50 mg before bed, we use it as a sleep aid at the hospital were I work.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Just lay on your back and take deep breaths. At first it may be irritating but do it in a cycle and dont stop. Then start counting numbers. Even if that dosent work, then try having a hot glass of milk. If nothing works, then get insurance and go to the doctor.

try taking a nice hot bath and soak for 20-30 minutes. Let your muscles relax. Get some aromatherapy bath salts. Lavender is a good one to help you relax. Light some candles and clear your mind. You can also get aromatic linen sprays, again lavender is your best bet. Go to Bed bath and beyond and ask one of the sales people for these items. They also have a great selection of relaxing music. This is where I buy many of my massage cd's for work.
Warm milk is good too.

Good luck

If you just lay there for more than 30 minutes, try switching locations. Get up and go to another room. Lay down on the couch or something. Then you won't keep getting anxious about falling asleep. I've had the same problem, and it helps.

It may sound old fashion, but first you should try not to have any caffiene 3 hours before you go to bed. I also suggest taking a warm bath and even drinking some warm milk.

Good Luck!
