After zapping my post in some way, I'll try again.
Yes, I did see this film~at the drive-in. The first film was Bless the Beasts & Children, typical of the weird matchups that theaters could come up with. Unfortunately, Vanishing Point played second.
Why do I say that?
Imagine finishing watching this film~from a car~end of the night~hearing engines start, followed by lots of revving~spinning gravel... And, they're off!
Well, some of us played it safe and remained where we were till all of the would-be Kowalskis were gone and it was safe for more-cautious drivers to leave.
Monday in classes, it sounded as if everyone had gone to the film someplace. Only, most of the praise seemed to be for: 1) Cleavon Little, 2) the car chase, 3) Barry Newman~in that order. Actually, Cleavon Little was my selection for favorite part of the film, too. I hadn't seen Cotton Comes to Harlem, and it would be several years till he wowed people again in Blazing Shadows, but I was determined to watch for this actor.
Poor Barry never really hit solid stardom, and this is how he'll be remembered:
"Barry Foster Newman (born November 7, 1938), is an American actor best known for the character "Kowalski" in the cult classic film Vanishing Point in which he plays a pill-popping outlaw/hero driving a white 1970 Dodge Challenger. He is also known for his television character Anthony Petrocelli on the crime-drama Petrocelli, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe."
So, there he is: Kowlski and Petrocelli.
I'm surprised this film hasn't been aired regularly. People do love car chases after all, though today's films barely resemble the films that started the need for speed. Perhaps some movie channel should have a marathon: Vanishing Point, Sugarland Express, The French Connection, Smokey & the Bandit, Bullitt, The Seven-Ups, etc.
So, yes, I do remember Vanishing Point!

Last of a vanishing breed of movie we'll never see the likes of again.
Images come to mind...the DJ over the radio...talking to a man he will never see...Kowalski popping upopers to stay awake...the Dodge Challenger racing across the highway through the desert...trying to deliver the car in time...his memory of his girl going surfing...and the tide bringing back the empty surfboard...
Beautiful...american filmmaking at ITS PUREST..
.there was an emotional riptide that followed us.....the viewer..... as we followed Kowalski as his grief slowly took a deeper hold on him....cresting as we cheered for Kowalski as he eluded the cops at every turn...and crashed with the devastating end of the movie.
Thanks. I think I know what my next DVD is going to be.
