It was a racist attack by six thugs on one person. Nothing excuses a brutal beating of someone, regardless of skin colour. The one thing I can't believe is that people are defending them. If this was a gang of white thugs attacking one black person, there would have been people baying for blood, they would be in police cells, and there would have been uproar caused by black people. Racism works both ways, but the punishment is never the same. That in itself is racist, and that is one thing I despise. Those thugs should be treated exactly the same as everyone else because, as they keep saying, skin colour should not matter.

I grew up in Olla, Louisiana which is about twelve miles from Jena. I went to school with Reed Walters the District Attorney. Reed, in my opinion was a very nice boy that would not say anything to hurt someone else if his life depended on it. I now live about 800 miles from Jena but I see the news about it and it always seems so lop-sided as to how the blacks were victims here. Was this entire thing not started by blacks in the first place? A black student asked if he could sit under the tree. Was under the tree a more desirable place to sit or was it because he knew if he sat there it would stir racial tensions? I am a correctional officer with about 13 years experience and over the years I have became a pretty good judge of character. The Jena six may slide for now but they will not have learned anything by this experience and I would almost guarantee that most of them will do time for another crime before they are 25 years old.

I think its good the civil rights people stepped in along with the protesters. I think its a town that still carries the racial inequality that alot of small towns do, not just in the south, but all over the country. I still cant believe the girl they interviewed actually said "yes, but they are coming from the outside and coming in" as if shes trying to blame the nooses on some outside person. Blatently lying is usually not a good thing to do when trying to defend yourself.

I appreciate that it's terrible to live in a town where they tolerate white kids putting up nooses, and the racial tensions were clearly handled very, very badly, but you're still not allowed to beat up another kid until he's unconscious.
