I'm dead set against the idea. Walls that keep people out can also keep people in. The Soviet Union had walls that kept people in.

On the southern border provided there was police patrols and technical backup it would stop 90% of the attempts. Further back from the border police application would stop 60% of the 10% that made over or under the fence. Employer sanctions would prevent 30% of the few who made it away from the border from finding employment, and further police efforts would capture and return 15% of the remainder. In the end we could be 95% effective....a managable number!

Fences do not keep people out. A reason not to come will.
Like...fining corporations that hire illegals until they bleed money. That will fix them every time. Make the fiscal punishment so harsh that people will not skirt immigration laws to get cheap labor.
It's just like the so-called War on Drugs. You can't stop it, and I don't care how many DEA agents you hire. You have to either remove the source or make the punishment so draconian for dealing it (or more appropriately, laundering the drug money) that no one wants to do it anymore.
Too bad prohibition doesn't work at all, and we proved it a long time ago. People will do harmful things to themselves in full knowledge of the fact. People will continue to find ways around our fences, too.

Not very! But it costs a lot of money, so we're likely to do it anyway. (we like spending money)
Don't you remember the tunnel in california? I think it was a mile long? It was lit (as in it had electricity). They found drugs that were being trafficked into southern california through it. It had been there quite a while. If we can't find the tunnels that have electricity to them, how effective is a wall? Hmmm...
We could always start rounding up all of the hispanics, and make them wear stars? Remind you of anything? It should.
The solution is not to hire them.
Amnesty? Why not make them legal? Accountable for crimes, tax paying citizens. (You and I both know that people that make under $20,000 a year don't pay squat in taxes, well... I hope you know).
Deport them all! As long as you're the one there watching the tears of their children fall as these people are carted off after living here for 20 years. Criminals? Yes, they are!
The black people escaping via the underground railroad were criminals too. This country? Founded largely by criminals that England wanted rid of.
It isn't easy, it isn't simple... Don't try to make it seem that way.

SERIOUSLY, has anybody priced a fence from West to East across the US / Canadian border?
And just like WAR, every obstacle put in place needs to be observed.
Otherwise its a wasted adventure.
PS check out my posted question in politics, look under Blood Lust
When do the US Minuet Man become federal employees?

Every wall ever build, the Maginot Line, the Adrian's wall, the Chinese wall, the Berlin wall, the Limes (Romans wall against Germanic tribes), has been proven nothing, but a waste of money. And a simple fence? I think, that illegal immigration is not discussed objectively, but used as a emotional issue to gain votes.

A fence is a very stupid idea. Patrols and surveillance equipment may help. A stable Mexican economy and opportunity for the people to earn a good living would eliminate the need for either.

Wrong kind of fence. Move our military bases along our borders and bring our military home. Let them man the borders with loaded machine guns. If Juan and Paco can cross our border so can Abdullah the butcher.

Not at all, I watched Penn and Tellers Bulls... show, they had 6 migrant workers build a solid, firm, borderline fence to the specifications of the wall the government wants to build. They spent all day building it, and it took less than five minutes for teams of two migrants to either climb the wall, bash through it, and dig under it.

Ha ha ha.... fence.... ha ha ha.... how stupid is that?
If the illegal aliens want to get in they're going to get in...... the only way to stop that is manning and patrolling the entire border. People are so naive if they think that a fence is going to slow any illegal immigration.

We wouldn't need a fence if Bush would liberate Mexico.
But first things first.
How about liberating 'The Divided States of America'!
