Piedmont, Lake Merritt, Rockridge are all nice. I know that guy said lake merritt is overvalued but I found it the best bang for your buck really. It's pretty expensive everywhere, so that always determined where I lived. If you want to look just outside Oakland, there's Orinda, Moraga, Walnut Creek, Albany, Emeryville. All of them are really close to Oakland, and have some of their own charm as well.

It is always a toss up between Rockridge and Montclair. Rockridge is popular becuase it is a walking neighborhood with a lot of restaurants and upscale shops. UC Berkeley is a about a 10 min walk up college. There have been some robberies this year later in the evening, but no shootings in the area. A lot of families and couples live there and of course, on cal gameday you have people walking up to Memorial Staduim.

Also, Montclair is a bit more upscale in the hills, but the tradeoff is that the village is smaller, with fewer restaurants (though the ones that are there are top notch!!!) Montclair is very safe - probably the safest in Oakland. The downside is you will probably have to drive a bit (wheras rockridge is a better place to stroll and there is a BART station in the heart of it)
, and most people live up in the hills away from the village. They are both fabulous neighborhoods.

I lived in Oakland for a few years in the 80's and visit freinds there regularly even now. Depending on your finances and street smarts, there are a few good areas to live. There are also a few areas to avoid. I would not recommend the Lake Merrit area. It is congested, and expensive disproportionate to its value. Probably North Oakland, bordering Berkely is all right, east of Shattuck. If cashy, the Oakland Hills can be alright.

Mainly the parts near berkeley, although the further west you move on , the worst the neighborhood becomes. your best option is rockridge for a vibrant lifestyle and classy homes, or the oakland hills for larger newer homes, but with no quick access to resturants and other stuff .

Very generally speaking, east of Mc Aurthur Blvd. You will find other small pockets that are nice , but don't be fooled. Oakland can bite you hard. Look at some of the other nearby towns if you can afford it.

I used to live near downtown/chinatown and found it to be convenient and fun. If I could have afforded it, I would have loved to live in Rockridge, it's a fun area with shops and restaurants. A little rougher but really okay is fruitvale, more working class/latin.
