The United States does not have a monarchy.

Why is it then not called a republic?

It IS called a Republic by all who know and understand the structure of our Government.
This democracy B.S. is pushed by those who are too ignorant to realize our Constitution gives us a REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC.
We have democratically elected representatives who are selected by majority vote. The only exception to majority vote is selection of the President and Vice President.
That election uses the electoral college, since the President represents the ENTIRE nation, not just one state.
The reason for the electoral college is due to the population densities of the various states.
A state with a small population is at a disadvantage in the Presidential election. The Constitution recognizes this fact and makes some small effort to provide equal representation by giving them 2 Senators just like all the larger states, and it sets up the electoral college for the same reason.
There are NO true Democracies in the entire world. It is easy to see that such a form of government is DOOMED to failure.
Our brilliant Founding Fathers were too smart to permit THAT disaster.
