There are actually reports of ancient Egyptian artifacts which turned out to be batteries. They used battery power to effect 'cures' and to plate metal.

In modern times, Ben Franklin is credited with creating a static electricity generator (he loved to use it as a prank), and of course, Thomas Edison created the 'dynamos' which generated electricity, as well as what we consider the modern day incandescent light bulb. I believe Thomas Edison holds the most patents here in the US.

I'll note here that Ben Franklin did NOT invent the static electricity generator. The same method he used to create static electricity was known to ancient Greeks, among others. But he is credited with extensive research into the matter, and for confirming that lightning is actually electricity. (something we take for granted these days, heheh)

Wikipedia has some good articles on the subject -
