It's not as bad as Disney!
But, yeah, it's pretty expensive...if you let it be.
I live real close to Six Flags Magic Mountian and often have season passes so I have learned to do it on the cheap.
I always eat breakfast on the outside (McDonald's usually). Parking is a must, even though they charge more than any other theme park I've been to (Disney is $10 and SF charges $15!). I bring a water bottle (they sell arrowhead) and some granola bars or candy in my purse, along with a few of those water flavor packets. At lunch I'm craving a soda so I get a meal but upgrade to the suvioner cup so that I can get a refill for only a $1 all day, and then I share that with the group and we take turns carrying it around. Later I snack on what I brought or maybe pick up some fries (they use seasoned salt on them and they are sooo good). Skip the other useless suvioners, and then eat dinner late outside of the park at a fast food place. Not including parking, I usually only bring about $20 for the day and still have a few bucks to play any carnival games if I want to. As for tickets in, I usually had the season pass, but when I didn't, I made sure I looked for the discounts availible, like cokes current 2-for-1 or online for $30 each.
So, if you plan right, you can do the day for about $60 (what a full price ticket would have cost).
But otherwise, to answer your question in the basic way, they do have alot of expenses with keeping the rides in prime condition, and running all the booths, and security, ticket sellers, ticket takers, etc. And overall the pay rate they give their employees isn't that bad. I remember in High school, a friend got a summer job there and they paid $8/hr when the minimum wage was $5.75. They keep their employees happy since a happy employee is better with customers.

Have fun!

This year(I work at Great Adventure) was worse than last year.So next year will be pricier. We have to buy our benefits(Sorry to correct you Steve). The price is designed to keep out the kids(I know it sounds silly). They want family's who will spend money on food/games etc. That's why they added Wiggles world. In most of the six flags it's so expensive is because of the ....Unions they get paid so much to do so little.I know their motto "A union man never goes home tired"
That one reason why...theirs also the attendance
Say two years ago (On a good day) their was 24,000+ on a Saturday that was awesome. This year on a good day their was 19,000+(That's bad). Most days were 14,000 avg
Some one has to pay for the low attendance(Some times us the employees) we lose a hour for lunch(Even if we don't take it). They go into panic mode(The upper management) when it goes into the red.
Theirs some talk of bankruptcy at the end of the year(Stocks are less than 3.50 a share that real bad).
So maybe next year will be better....

Why is any theme park so expensive? Because no one boycots them to bring the prices down. If you go all the time, they know they have you in their hip pocket. Why is gas so expensive? The same reason. They know that you are dependent on them and therefore they can get away with it. No one has the time or can afford to boycot all the gas stations unless the world stops moving. Theme parks know that you will come for a day at the park or take a vacation to their place for a week. And you fall for it. Right. Don't you still go to them regardless of their prices?

Because the cost to operate a theme park is very expensive. The highest cost is salaries and benefits for the employees, then you have power to operate all those rides, insurance is going to cost millions of dollars a year, maintenance on the park and much more we cant even think of because we are not in the industry.

But really think about what you are spending and what you are getting for your entertainment dollar, I don't know how much a day at your six flags is but say $60.00 for one day, even if the park is only open 12 hours that's only $5.00 an hour your paying for that entertainment, even factor in another $50.00 for food for the day, $110.00. Now compare it to going to a movie for the same amount of time. Even cheap in my area is $8.50 to get into a movie, average movie time about an hour and a half, lets give it two to be fair, that's 6 movies, $51.00, plus popcorn a soda and a candy that's about another $15.00, $90.00, that comes out to $141.00 for equivalent movie time.

lots of reasons. Electricity to keep the rides going and power all the buildings etc.......The people that work there cost a lot of money to keep them there. Maintenance and upkeep have to be very expensive. Advertising. The grounds keeping (lawn) is costly. This is just to name a few. Not to mention like all businesses they would like to make money.

The costs the you pay for the enterance is just to keep the rides running. That money doesn't even go twards paying the workers. The reason food is so expensive is becasue that is what pays the workers.

I KNOW! I don't know why, but it does seem like a rip off to pay that kind of money to stand in lines all day.
