What does the number 5 mean? What does the number 6 mean? 5 to 6. I see this in sporting events too. That the odds are for example, 2-1. Two to one. What do these numbers mean? Thank you.

It's a ratio, essentially if OJ were to be tried six times, he would be acquitted five of those times.

For your other ratio 2:1 it's important to remember what is referred to. For example you may have 10 dogs and 7 cats in your back yard, so the ratio of dogs to cats is 10:7. Or in other words out of 17 animals if you were to blindly pick one up 10 times out of 17 it would be a dog, 7 times out of 17 it would be a cat.

So when you see odds of 2:1 Cardnals and Yankees, you have to consider the names of the teams in the same order of the number given. When the Cards play the Yanks over a period of three games the Cards are going to win twice and the Yankees once. Or the Cards will win two thirds of all there games with the Yankees.

It means you have to bet six dollars to win five. It also means the reporter is full of crap. You can't make a bet in any of the sports books in Nevada on the O.J. Simpson. Bets are taken only on sporting competitions and various games. Nevada gaming law prohibits accepting any wager on any political or current event.

I'm probably wrong since several others see it differently and I don't gamble but I took that to mean it is a toss-up slightly favoring conviction.
