Are you talking about the CBEST? That's the test to qualify you to teach in California.
Is it hard? For some people it is. I don't mean to sounds like I'm denigrating your field or profession, but the people I knew who had a harder time with the exam were ed majors. The people who took the test blind and passed were my friends who studied other fields (computer science, engineering, physics, chemistry ... see a pattern here?) but couldn't find jobs, so they decided to take a stab at teaching.
I have seen some of the test questions, and I feel pretty confident that I'd pass. But then again, I was a science student, and I have a master's degree.
While I know a lot of people who would be brilliant at teaching music, arts, literature and so forth, I also know that math and science aren't their strong suits, so they do have to prepare more for the CBEST than some folks.
