The surface ocean currents which are supposed to be driven by winds have no significance as the direction of such currents will change once the direction of wind changes .Generally, by ocean currents we mean deep ocean currents only which are caused by thermal conditions inside the water.Hence the above statement is false.

It may have some effect on the way water moves, but if I'm not mistaken, the deep sea currents are caused by the temperature difference of various water locations (Arctic, Caribbean, etc.) causing a natural pumping motion and a little bit of tectonic motion.

it does have some significance but the reason for currents are the earths techtonic plates moving underneath the earths surface...
