An epic is a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style: Homer's Iliad is an epic poem.

Homer was the Greek poet who wrote the epics about the Trojan War (The Illiad), and Odysseus's adventures returning home after that war (The Odyssey).
