it's not protein synthesis. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for anything protein. The ribosomes bind to the rough endoplasmic reticulum once it begins to synthesize a protein destined for sorting.
smooth endoplasmic reticulum doesn't have ribosomes, therefore it can't be responsible for protein synthesis. Hope that helps :)

RER has ribosomes which do protein synthesis... and endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for a form of synthesis... therefore there is only one answer left

Not protein synthesis because it would require ribosomes which the smooth e.r. doesn't have.
