Value depends on three things. Condition, scarcity and demand. According to red book 20,010,000 of these pennies were minted. Red book prices your coin by condition thusly (though keep in mind red book prices tend to be on the high end):
Good: $0.20
Very Good: $0.30
Fine: $0.50
Very Fine: $0.80
Extra Fine: $1.25
Almost Uncirculated: $5.00
Perfect/Not circulated: $13.00

Good Luck!

The 1901 cent is better known as the Indian Head Cent, while the nickname Wheat Penny was given to cents dated 1909-1958. The 1901, in condition well circulated with the Liberty word on the headband worn off or partly visible is valued at $1 to $1.50. It's not a rare date and has a high mintage of 79,609,158. Better than that in condition average circulated but without any luster the Indian Head cent has a value of $2. The 1943 steel and 1946 bronze Wheat cents are also common dates and regularly found in dealer's mixed cents bin for 10 cents max each in average circulated grade. They are more of historical than collector values. The 1943 cent was struck on zinc-coated steel blanks to conserve copper during the war, while the 1946-dated was struck using ammunition casings collected from the war.

First of all it is a cent not a penny. The mintage figure given was correct for the 1938-D cent. it is usually found in a dealers box of mixed wheat cents for 5 cents or so. Only when it is in mint state does it have any real value, it sells for $10 and up. It is worth holding onto for the 1930's cents have kind of been ignored by the collecting community. The big one is the 1931-S for it had a low mintage, so very few saved the others. In due time it's value will go up, but it will take a few years. Put it in a coin holder and tuck it away.

1901's are really not that rare, and probably not worth that much. Try going to ebay, and look at what they are selling for. I would guess about 25 cents. The steel penny was made when copper was scarce during WW11. Probably worth about 50 cents.

The date 1938D is not rare for a wheat cent and worth a quarter or less with most details still on it. I have a jar of these cents and most are commons from 30s till 50s.

You can't get very much from a penny like that from a collector, but you could get more than a collector would give from other regular people. By the way, nice find.
