The check engine light tells you there is a problem with your emission system. The rpm fluctuation and burnt smell could be a catalytic converter problem, especially with that high mileage. Take it to a MUFFLER SHOP and get it checked. They should also be able to read the codes from the check engine light.

Could be over heating or your belt came loose and is rubbing in which the friction causes the burning smell.

I don't know hardly anything about cars, but these two things have happened to me so this is just a guess!
