I guess it all depends on what context it is used. If you say Jesus Christ aloud in a prayer thats fine. But if you say it in anger, thats when its consider a curse word.

Well being its a word you are saying aloud and that it has become a staple of modern society to utilize it as curse or phrase to reflect something as bad....sure it sounds bad. It sounds like a name to me friend actually it is. Try saying it without having to shout it in anger.

It can sound like either depending on how you say it. If you yell it it's a curse and if you say it softly it is followed by words (not directly following hitting your thumb with a hammer) then it can sound like a name.
