im sorry, but you didn't get my point, im sorry i might be misunderstood between boot and power up, so for this sake i will use boot/power equally of the same value since i have posted the question already it couldn't be reverted unless i have to close the poll for answers and ask the same question again which is a redundant job for me. anyway, to give you a more perspective look, the computer can BOOT UP, but sometimes, while on the operating system it suddenly shutdown,
ok why not virus? because after shutdown, when you try to restart by pressing the boot button/power button, it doesn't boot/ or we can say power up. i can't remember a virus powerful enough to hold the system on lockdown by suppressing power, so it is not a virus. that myth is close.

on my side i apologize for the boot and power issue, i have reiterated my position for this question, well thanks in advance.

If loading of windows is not getting completed, it could be messed up. Try this repair that leaves ALL files INTACT. You need the Win XP CD.

Em....you say you have no virus cause you haven't loaded the operating system.. But you say XP installed. ?????

Are you thinking because your computer isn't booting to your Operating System that you DONT have a virus???? Not true.

It seems to me that if it is booting and then shutting down and you do HAVE an operating system installed, it is either your power pack OR, you have a boot virus (continuous boot or shut down).

Have you tried booting into safe mode (holding the f8 key), or booting into last know good configuration? That is if you have an operating system.

If you can get into safe mode, right click My Computer and choose properties. Then choose advanced tab and then Start Up and Recovery, then settings. Under system failure make sure Automatically Restart is UNchecked.
Then run some spyware software.
Superantispyware
Adware

if you think it is because of the hardware, there are several reason why this can happen. the main reason is because of faulty PSU. overheated system (CPU fan failure) can also cause this but i think is not possible coz from from power on to kernel loading usually wont consume too much time therefore wont cpu wont emit much heat. since u can boot, try entering the CMOS setup and wait what happen, did the system shut down again. if it did then it confirm your faulty equipment probably PSU and hopefully not mobo. if it manage to stay up without problem, then u can narrow down to either windows kernel (but i cant explain why second time u switch on, the system never start) or faulty device eg Gfx card or RAM Module or even Mobo. try disassemble them, put the part one at a time and start your system.. your mobo will make lots of beeping noise but if it do not shut down then the part u installed is ok.. continue with other part.. its a hideous job but it'll do the trick..

u should know that holding your start button for 5 sec will reboot your system.. check whether it stuck or not... lol..
