x^2/2-x/4=5/2
multiply by 4
2x^2 - x - 10 = 0
(2x - 5)(x + 2) = 0
x = 5/2, or x = -2

To start, I would get rid of the fractions by multiplying everything by 4.

2x^2 - x = 20

Get 0 on one side:

2x^2 - x - 10 = 0

Factor:

(2x-5) (x+2) = 0

2x - 5 = 0 or x + 2 = 0

2x = 5

x = 5/2 or x = -2

common denominator for whole problem is 4. Multiply everything by 4.
2x^2 - x = 10
now put it in quadratic equation order.
2x^2 - x - 10 = 0
and solve by factoring
2x^2 - 5x + 4x - 10 = 0
x(2x - 5)+2(2x-5) = 0
(x+2)(2x-5)=0
x = -2 or x = 5/2

2 x ² - x = 10
2 x ² - x - 10 = 0
(2x - 5) (x + 2) = 0
x = 5 / 2 , x = - 2

I type this in:
solve(x^2/2-x/4=5/2,x);

the program (Maple) spits out:

5/2, -2

but you should probably use the quadratic equation or the method of completing the square or factoring for any of these type of problems

x^2/2-x/4=5/2
multiply both sides by 4
2x^2-x=10
2x^2-x-10=0
(2x-5)(x+2)=0
x=5/2,-2
