Well to go into all the details probably isn't necessary - WPA2 is a stronger better more secure method than WPA which in itself is fairly strong.
WPA takes an average of 4x10-20 years (that is 10 to the 20th power) to crack if you use a 21 letter pass phrase. WPA2 much much longer!

The issue is that to use either ALL parts of your system has to support the standard. Both routers and wireless cards. Not all cards/laptops etc support WPA2 just yet. The good news is you can still use WPA even if your router supports WPA2 so if you get a new router get one that supports both.

So if your equipment supports wpa2 use it! If not use WPA both are very secure, provided you use a strong password. Most people don't use a real password they use a name, a dictionary word etc. So use a real password and your safe.

Here is a great article to help in following the technical details.

WEP and WPA are wireless encryption standards. They are methods by which your data is scrambled while it is being transmitted over a wireless connection WEP was first - It is now considered obsolete because of tools that have been published that allow just about anyone to hack a WEP connection is a fairly short time. WPA (there are several updates and modifications - WPA2, WPA-TKIP and so on) is the current standard. Not all hardware supports all versions. You have to pick a version that all your hardware supports. WPA is not easy to hack, though some have claimed to have done it. These days, encryption by itself is not enough. You need to layer your defenses if you want a secure system. Use all the tools a modern home router and networking system gives you Encryption MAC ID filtering Hide the SSID Strong Passwords Change default names and passwords put passwords on all desktops and network shares enforce access privileges You want to make a stronger system? Run Linux - you get better tools and more security Have Fun
