Picture in your mind, a classroom. Now picture 2 balloons that are in the room. One is sitting on the floor, while the other is leaning against the ceiling. Explain why the 2 balloons are where they are.

The test is on densities, graphing, measurements
so it might have somethin to do wit one of those topics-my guess is density
thanks soooo much!!!!

The one on the ceiling is filled with a gas that is lighter than air, and the one on the floor is filled with a gas that is heavier than air.

The question has to do with vapor density. Vapor density is a comparison of the weight of a gas compared to that of air. The vapor density for air is given the value of 1. A material with a vapor density of less than 1 will float. A material with a vapor density of less than one will sink.

The vapor density of any material is the molecular weight of the gas/vapor divided by that of air. The molecular weight of air is found by taking a "weighted average" of the molecules found in air. Air is roughly 79% Nitrogen and 21% oxygen. That means, mathematically .79(28) + .21(32). Nitrogen weighs 14, oxygen weighs 16 - but both atoms are diatomic, so they have to be doubled. The final molecular weight of air is approximately 29.

To sum it up, if you divide the MW of a gas by 29, and it's less than 1 - it floats, greater than 1 it sinks. That should explain the balloons.

The helium in the balloon on the ceiling is less dense than the air around it...?

Could it be that the one the floor has air or something heavier than air in it and the one on the ceiling has helium or some other gas in it? don't you have information about this in your reading assignments?

I think the one on the ceiling is a politician and full of hot air.
The one sitting on the floor is the taxpayer, depleted of all their assets through taxation of everything they "think" they own.

The one on the floor is losing its air, so gravity takes over and what goes up has to come down! (eventually)
