Cup pins should be 6 inches apart.
Also consider drilling holes (again 6" apart) at a 45 angle half-way into the post - and using a large - 10" carriage bolt to hold the rails. Make the holes slightly wider than the stem of the bolt can slip in and out easily.
I used cups until someone showed me the carriage bolt idea - it was a lot cheaper than buying new cups all the time.

Most jump heights are measured in three inch increments (2'3", 2'6", 2'9", etc.) so most people space the jump cup pin holes approximately 3" apart. Just make sure when setting the jumps you make sure you're measuring to the top of the pole - don't go by the jump cup hole because usually the pole adds a couple of inches!

Ithink 3 inches would be best because then you arent raising them too much, but just enough each time. I would start the holes so the jump is 18 inches, and go up from their.
Good Luck! ♥♥♥

i'm often construction my very own jumps, out of something i will locate. i've got used crates, old carpet, fallen branches, a pair of old wood ladders, old fence posts, tyres, old barrells, planks and so on. It does wonders to get horses much less spooky and larger at leaping something which you factor them at, and that i've got no longer paid for any of it - i've got chanced on all of it mendacity around my dad's old stuff. the only element approximately making up your guy or woman jumps, is to ensure that they are risk-free. i've got checked all the stuff i've got made jumps out of, to ensure that there is not greater probability of them hurting the horse than the different jumps.

3-4in seems the most common. There's some of each in the arena at the stable I ride at, the 3in being more common than the 4.

Look at your jump heights at shows which range from 18" - 2' - 2'3" - 2'6" - 2'9" - 3' - etc. etc. Make your holes to equal those and you should be all set.
