The main problem in fish being bullied in aquariums regardless of the species is aquarium size. Fish become agressive when they fell their territory is being invaded. My personal recommendation is to have a maximum of 1 fish pere every 10 gallons of water. If you provide caves in your aquascaping better with live rock this might help as it gives them security and they dont feel harrassed. Being specific now, I have found the Ocellaris to be less aggressive than the True Percula, and also hardier. ou shouldn't have more than 1 clownfish in your aquarium unless they are a mated pair, which is usually hard to find. Clownfish are not female/male. Usually the larger clownfish will become the female and turn into a brownish color (Which I dislike). I have had years of experience in reef tanks and personally don't recommend damselfish. They are extremely territorial. Some say that they are best suited for cycling a new aquarium but I don't like them at all. If you will use them for cycling then return them or get rid of them when you add new fish. They are way too territorial and will follow and bite any new fish added in the aquarium. I don't think its worth it to loose an expensive fish (tang, angel) because of $5 damsel. Perfect combination for clownfish in my cases have been yellow tangs, mandarin goby, and they both add color to the aquarium.
Good Luck

That's the nature of damsels. They're classes as semi-aggressive and aggressive depending on the species. Clowns, if this is a percula or ocellaris they are are semi-aggressive at best, and usually are the ones that will end up bullied.

I've had customers tell me of using damsels to cycle their SW tanks, only to have them kill eels and lionfish that they tried to introduce later. If you start with damsels in your tank, you should only add fish that are at least, if not more aggressive after them. You''l need to either return your clowns (for their own protection), use a tank divider, or set up a second tank.
