It's not accurate to say that theories get *proved*, but they do get tested. A theory must make testable claims to be considered a scientific theory, otherwise it is mere speculation. A theory that predicts wrong gets scrapped if it was totally wrong, or maybe reworked, if it was a little off.

Some theories by their nature can't be tested under controlled conditions. For example, there is no way to perform controlled experiments in stellar evolution. In cases like this, the scientist can only search for relevant observations in nature. Every time a supernova is observed, bits of stellar theory get tested.

If they are reputable... they will publish their results in hopes that someone else can use their work for a starting point... if they are not reputable... they claim to have made it work... like the cold fusion debacle.
