Please don't say rocks. I keep the turtles in deep water to rocks won't work. Last time my dad used a styrofoam and it got WAY dirty. It had all that nasty stuff sticking on it. Now, my dad wants to use the box that holds eggs. I asked him, why can't he just buy a dock? He said he doesn't want to. Any ideas?

A peice of wood is not a good idea since most are sprayed with chemicals known to cause birth and cancer defects in humans which should also not be good for turtles. Either way your going to have to spend money. You can buy plexiglass and aquarium silicone not from Lowes or Home Depot which carry toxins, but from a store like Petco which carries aquarium silicone or you can simply stack rocks which is what I did at first and worked real well, just be careful not to scratch or break your tank. Having a pet turtle is not cheap and will cost you hundreds of dollars in the end.

Basking area requirements are:
Heat source – Necessary to entice basking. This should be approximately 10 degrees F warmer than water temperatures. Areas that are too hot may not encourage basking or even expose a turtle to hyperthermia.
Accessible – This area has to be partially submerged on at least one end or have a ramp. It must be very easy to climb onto.
Safe – Your turtle should not be able to trap or wedge itself between the basking area and the tank walls. Your turtle should also not be able to use a basking area as point of escape.
Non-toxic - Even platforms made of natural and organic materials may have water-altering effects. Be careful when using a home made platform – for instance, wood should not be chemically treated and metal should not rust or corrode.
Stability – A platform should stay in place with no chance of falling apart, becoming dismantled or knocked down by the turtle or another pet.
Textured - The platform should allow the turtle's plastron to dry as well.

Basking platforms are not expensive, I'd just go to the store and get one that is safe and easy to install. http://redearslider.com/basking_platform.html

UM A FLOATING DOCK WILL COST YOU FROM 15 BUCKS UP AND A FLOATING LOG WILL BE ABOUT 30 BUCKS OTHER THAN BUYING A FLOATING LOG YOU CAN TRY PUTTING A LOG OR DRIFT WOOD LIKE AT AN ANGLE...

EXAMPLE GET A LOG THAT WILL NOT FIT PERFECTLY SIDE TO SIDE AND STICK IT IN THERE SO IT'LL BE HALF WAY IN THE WATER AND HALF WAY OUT... I SAW IT IN A BOOK I BOUGHT.... I SPECIAL ORDERED IT FROM BARNES AND NOBLE.....

GOOD LUCK

if your water is that deep that no rock will do, maybe you should consider letting some of the water out. if they have no area where they can rest , they can drown. contrary to what someone else had told you on a previous question. and these are little guys right? they only need water as deep as twice the width of their shell.

textured plastic or acrylic would do. you can also use suction caps (the ones used for aquarium dividers) to hold the dock in place.
