The US has a slightly lower life expectancy than most other 1st world nations (1-3 years). Many have erroneously attributed this to the fact that the US is 1 of the only 1st world nations that doesn't have socialized medicine. What they fail to account for: murder rate and road deaths. After these factors are considered, the US moves to the top of the life expectancy stats.

The US actually has a higher survival rate for most potentially terminal diseases (cancer being the big one- no pun) than most other 1st world nations.

We used to be the country that had the longest life expectancy, but no longer. The last time I saw something on it we had dropped below number 40. Andorra is first, but our life expectancy is still 78. The Internet has lots of information on the subject if you are interested in more.

I dont know but the new life expectancy rates was based on how many people have access to "free" healthcare so naturally the U.S. would be lower. Its not a good reflection of true life expectancy rates like before when the U.S. ranked higher.
