Slab means just that... a slab. No basement, no crawl space, just a cement pad.

Slab Basement

A slab refers to the type of foundation a home has been built on. Concrete perimeter would have a wood sub floor while a "slab" is solid concrete set and poured directly on the ground. There is usually no basement. Just be aware that if you are looking in an area that has fairly steep hills, you could run into the situation where most of the house is on a slab and the rest on a raised foundation. In that case you MAY have a small basement space.

Depending on the area...a slab here sits on the ground but still has foundation walls, some older homes and some states used to allow slabs to be poured directly on the ground without a foundation but those became an issue, so most Building Codes dont allow that any more. A foundation is the vertical walls around the perimeter of the house that usually are built to go down below the frost line. Here ours are 42" deep minimum. Think about it..The entire weight of the house, plus the snow load, the wind loads, all transfer down through the foundation to carry the weight. If their is no foundation and the house is simply sitting on a 4 inch slab of concrete, that could create a few problems. What happens when the ground freezes? Ice is very strong. The slab may lift and then when it thaws? Hope this helped!

RE:
In a real estate ad does "slab" mean no basement or just unfinished?

The floor of the basement consists of a slab of concrete, i.e. poured cement. This is contrary to some older houses where the floor of the basement is dirt. Not to be confused with "the base is slab". Which refers to a house built with a concrete slab floor with no basement.

It means it's unfinished and could be a tiny crawl space (as in less than 1 meter tall or 6' tall or even 8' tall. The point is it's unfinished. For some people it's a complete turn off and they won't even consider a home with an unfinished basement due to the expenses of putting it in, and even possibly having to raise the home to make it usable space (height wise).

No basement at all, just a slab of concrete. sorry :(
I think they should have to say "none" instead of slab, it's less confusing that way.

No basement. Slab of concrete

It's just a slab of concrete, exactly as the name implies. The slab sits on the ground with nothing under it but the ground itself.
